Why do candidates provide personal financial information?

Virginia's system of representative government is dependent in part upon the ability of part-time citizen legislative members to participate fully in the legislative process. To ensure citizens maintain the highest trust in their elected representatives, candidates for the General Assembly are required to disclose certain personal financial information, such as outside employment, investments and business partnerships
