Each winter, VPAP analyzes campaign contributions to identify donors that for the first time began giving directly to multiple legislative candidates during the previous calendar year.
The screen below identified donors that gave to at least 20 General Assembly candidates in 2013, but had never given directly to more than five legislative candidates in any previous year.
There were six donors who fit this criteria in 2013:
Donations to 46 candidates totaling $59,500
The California-based biotech company has been represented by lobbyists in Virginia since 2010. (The company's name proved tricky for 11 candidates, who listed it on campaign finance reports as "Genetech.")
Donations to 63 candidates totaling $52,500
The social media giant has been represented by lobbyists in Virginia since 2011.
Donations to 38 candidates totaling $21,000
This Roanoke-based company handles risk management plans and liability of constitutional officers.
Donations to 22 candidates totaling $18,219
This Richmond-based company provides laboratory tests for factors and biomarkers.
Donations to 22 candidates totaling $17,850
This Texas-based company runs a chain of pawn shops that offer a variety of consumer finance options, including payday loans.
Donations to 30 candidates totaling $11,768
This Richmond-based public affairs firm has been a familiar player for years, but only last year made a significant number of direct donations to legislative candidates.
