Election-Results Map

State Board of Elections and VPAP Team Up to Display Election-Night Results

For Immediate Release

November 2, 2009

After the polls close Tuesday evening, the Virginia State Board of Elections will deploy an innovative map application that will make it easier for citizens to follow the outcome of the Governor's race as ballots are counted.

"This map will significantly improve our ability to quickly and accurately convey election results to the general public," said Nancy Rodrigues, Secretary of the State Board of Elections.

The online map will display - in real time - the results from each city and county, as well as keep track of how many precincts in each locality have reported. In addition to the Governor's race, the map will display results in the race for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.

The State Board of Elections developed the map in partnership with the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan group that seeks innovative ways to keep citizens informed about Virginia politics.

"We applaud the State Board for its openness to better ways to organize election-night information," VPAP executive director David Poole said. "People who follow the results will be spared the inconvenience of scrolling down a long list of localities. This new map will let people see - at a glance - what is happening across the state."

The election-night map will be published simultaneous at www.sbe.virginia.gov and www.vpap.org.

Place your mouse over any locality, and you get a pop-up window showing the results and # of precincts reporting. You will be able to click through for precinct-level results.

The election-night map was designed by Kathy Cashel, a Washington-based Web programmer, and is made possible through generous funding from Verizon and Dominion.
