Update: Armstrong/Poindexter Breaks House Spending Record
Date: 01/19/2012
Ward Armstrong and Charles Poindexter spent nearly $2.4 million in a bitter contest hard against the North Carolina line, a record for a House of Delegates contest. (The previous high was $1.7 million set in a 2007 dust-up between Del. Dave Albo and Democratic challenger Greg Werkheiser in Fairfax County.)
The most expensive Senate race was the Edd Houck-Bryce Reeves contest, in which the candidates spent a combined a $2.6 million. (The all-time Senate record is $3.2 million, set in 2007 by Chap Petersen and Jeannemarie Davis in Northern Virginia.)
Note: The all-time records date to 1997, when VPAP began following money in legislative elections. Back in those days, a candidate who topped $100,000 was considered a big spender.
