527 Donations

VPAP has posted several dozen donations from "527 Groups" since Monday.

527 groups raise money for political activity such as voter mobilization and issue advocacy. As long as they stop short of expressly advocating the election or defeat of a specific federal candidate, 527 groups are not subject to contribution limits imposed by the Federal Elections Commission. 527s have become a convenient way for corporations, labor unions and special interests to flow unlimited contributions into the political process.

The 2009 Virginia elections are the first test of a state law aimed at bringing greater transparency to 527 activities in state politics.

Independent Expenditures

The State Board of Elections provided VPAP with the latest expense by groups -- working without coordination or authorization of candidates -- that are mobilizing to influence the outcome of November election in Virginia.

There have been two donations from "527 Groups" since Wednesday:

  • $160,000 from Republican State Leadership Committee to Chris Stolle for Delegate
  • $100,000 from American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees to House Democratic Caucus
  • $539 from Service Employees International Union to Chuck Caputo for Delegate

Senate Special Election

Three Virginia Beach candidates have filed paperwork with the State Board of Elections in anticipation of a special election in Senate District 8.

The incumbent Senator, Ken Stolle, is running for Sheriff of Virginia Beach next month. If Stolle wins, a special election would be called to fill the remainder of his current term, which runs through January 2012.

The three candidates are:

A fourth candidate, Jeffrey Breit, filed paperwork but then later reportedly decided not to run.
