Joseph Whited, a Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District seat, missed a reporting deadline with the Federal Election Commission this week.
The campaign now has until 5 p.m. Monday to report how much money it raised and spent in the period between April 1 and April 24 or face fines, audit or other legal action, according to an FEC letter sent Tuesday.
Whited said Thursday his campaign has been in touch with the FEC and “everything’s fine.” The campaign is compiling numbers, and he expects to be settled up today.
“That was just a foul up on our end,” Whited said. “It was literally like an ‘Oops, look at the calendar, we should have turned that paperwork in.’”
FEC officials declined to comment on specific cases.
Candidates turned in quarterly reports March 31. The short April reporting period came ahead of the 5th Congressional District Republican Convention on May 14 at Nelson County High School.
