Delegate Dickie Bell, who represents part of Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro, issued a statement saying that he supports citizens who are opposing the courthouse referendum that, if passed, would mean a $45 million dollar courthouse complex being built in Verona near the government center.

“I’ve been impressed by Augusta citizens and groups who are standing up to oppose spending $45 million on a new courthouse," Bell said. "They are questioning the reasoning behind a move and if all alternatives have been thoroughly explored. I support their efforts to demand greater fiscal stewardship and I share their concerns."

Bell said in the release that citizens should continue to question the current plan the county has for the referendum and the accuracy of the data in the studies for the potential courthouse in Verona.

The county has hosted a series of town hall meetings, tours and participated in other informational sessions such as a forum on Thursday evening hosted by the Shenandoah Valley Tea Party to discuss the referendum.
