Virginia gubernatorial contender Tom Perriello has loaned his campaign $150,000 just days before the June 13 Democratic primary, according to a disclosure published by the Virginia Public Access Project.
The most recent campaign finance reports show that as of June 1, Northam had $1.3 million on hand while Perriello had $734,000.
Both candidates have since announced new ad buys, including one from Perriello on Thursday where he accuses President Trump of "abuse of power" and invokes Virginia's history for resisting tyranny.
Perriello has been supported by national progressive groups, but much of his financial support comes from a few wealthy donors, made possible because Virginia has no limits on campaign contributions.
A spokesman for Perriello said he tapped his savings and sold some of his assets in order to make the loan. His most recent personal financial disclosure lists between $80,000 and $550,000 in investment and retirement accounts and between $20,000 to $200,000 in equities in companies.
It's not unusual for Virginia's Democratic candidates to spend their own money on their bids. Northam loaned himself money for his 2013 lieutenant governor campaign, and incumbent Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who cannot serve consecutive terms under the state constitution, put about $500,000 into his campaign after his first loss in 2009.
