  • "PCR" refers to "Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction laboratory testing" which detects presence of the COVID-19 virus.
  • Each bar represents the number of PCR tests conducted by date. Some test results may be pending, The gray area indicates days when "rate of positivity" cannot be accurately calculated because not all test results have not been received.
  • The Percent (%) Positive rate is calculated by averaging the positive cases as a percentage of total cases from the selected day and six previous days.
  • Chart counts "testing encounters." Some people (such as health care providers or recovering patients) have been tested more than once.

On April 5, VDH began to include "probable" cases in a daily list that had been limited to cases "confirmed" by tests. Probable include symptomatic patients diagnosed in a clinical setting, but not tested.

  • "Available Capacity" is the number of beds available in Virginia hospitals that are unoccupied and could accommodate COVID-19 patients.
  • "Other Beds Occupied" are those beds in use by patients who are being treated for conditions other than COVID-19.
  • "COVID-19 Beds Occupied" is the combined number of patients being treated for COVID-19, including symptomatic patients whose test results are pending.
