VPAP Appoints New Board Members

The nonprofit, nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project has elected four new members to three-year terms on the Board of Directors.

Jeff Britt: Britt is a vice president at McGuireWoods Consulting. His political background includes two statewide campaigns for former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore. Britt is the immediate past chairman of the VPAP Young Associates. Jeff was born in Petersburg and raised in Prince George.

Les Cheek III: Cheek is a retired casualty insurance lawyer/lobbyist active in local and state conservation politics. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Virginia League of Conservation Voters and an at-large member of the Fauquier County Republican Committee. Born and raised in Richmond, Cheek lives on a horse farm near Warrenton.

Margaret Edds: Edds worked more than 30 years as a political reporter and later an editorial writer for The Virginian-Pilot. She is the author of several books, including An Expendable Man: The Near Execution of Earl Washington Jr. and Claiming the Dream: The Victorious Campaign of Douglas Wilder of Virginia. Margaret lives in Richmond.

Chuck James: James is a partner at Williams Mullen, where he has a white-collar and investigations practice. He served as chief deputy under Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. His prior legal work includes a six-year stint as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia. Chuck lives in Chesterfield County.

The VPAP Board also re-appointed Jeff Merriman to a three-year term and Albert Pollard Jr. to a two-year term.

The VPAP Board elected the following slate of officers for 2015:

Chair: Larry Roberts, a partner in the Government Affairs Group for Venable, a Washington-based law firm.

Vice-Chair/Secretary: Jay Smith, a partner in Capital Results, a Richmond-based public affairs and business consulting firm.

Treasurer: William E. Wilson, a retired head of the Virginia Division of Legislative Automated Systems.

VPAP is a nonprofit that connects Virginians with nonpartisan information about Virginia politics in easily understood ways. Its two primary services are vpap.org, a free website that brings transparency to Virginia politics, and VaNews, a daily compilation of newspaper headlines about politics and government.
