Social Media Specialist

 

Are you an experienced social media whiz who is interested in politics, but exhausted by constant outrage from both political parties? Would you be energized by the opportunity to become the social media voice of a nonpartisan group whose mission is to promote fact-based information about Virginia politics? 

 

The Virginia Public Access Project (vpap.org) is seeking a recent or pending college graduate to serve as its social media specialist. If you are looking for a chance to work hands-on and make an impact, this is the opportunity for you.

Since 1997, VPAP has elevated public understanding of Virginia politics by organizing data in ways that are easily accessible and free of partisan bias. Our website and data visualizations provide insights into campaign finance, the legislative process, election results and more. We also produce VaNews, a free daily aggregation service with more than 22,000 subscribers. Our Twitter account -- @vpapupdates -- has 18,000 followers Our annual operating budget is $1 million a year.

 

VPAP’s nonpartisan approach has won the trust and support of legislators, activists, business leaders and individuals from across the political spectrum.

 

About the Position

As part of the team, this role will drive VPAP’s digital advertising efforts across multiple platforms to reach new people and grow our audience, particularly among a younger audience. This is a full-time, salaried post-graduate fellowship from June through December 2022. In addition, this role would support the data team during high-peak times during the election season by helping with data matching and other duties. (Note: Currently, the VPAP staff is working remotely. At some point in 2022 the team will return to its loft office in downtown Richmond at least two days a week.) 

 

Responsibilities:

Become the idea generator for social media content. You will build and execute social media strategy through audience identification, platform determination, benchmarking and messaging. You will generate content that appeals to a wide audience, particularly Virginians under 35. You will be responsible for quality assurance of all content and measuring the effectiveness of each campaign. You must have a willingness to put aside your own views and adhere to VPAP’s rigorous nonpartisan approach.

 

As our Social Media Specialist, you get to

  • Conduct market research to identify social-media engagement opportunities

  • Strategize, develop, and execute multi-faceted awareness and lead generation campaigns

  • Plan out and execute social media posts including creative and copy

  • Identify key performance indicators and evaluate campaign performance and ROI

  • Help maintain and strengthen VPAP’s brand

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, public relations, new media or the equivalent

  • Active social media presence or portfolio equivalence

  • Strong awareness of digital trends and social media

  • Demonstrable knowledge of social media analytics tools

  • Ability to write clearly, concisely

  • Ability to create .gifs and short videos is considered a plus

  • Experience with paid social media campaigns a plus

  • Fluency in English

 

Salary and Benefits:

 

This is a full-time, temporary position. The salary is $3,425 a month (equivalent to annual salary of $41,100.) Prospective team members should send a cover letter and resume to dpoole@vpap.org. Deadline: April 8, 2022
