House of Virginia 

  • House District 2 - Esteban Garces is the first Democrat to file for this open seat, which was moved from Southwest Virginia to Prince William and Stafford counties. He'll face Stafford County Supervisor Mark Dudenhefer, a Republican.
  • House District 3 - Democrat Vern Presley will challenge freshman GOP Del. Will Morefield in this Southwest Virginia district.
  • House District 5 - Israel O'Quinn, a Republican candidate, is the first candidate to emerge for the seat being vacated by GOP Del. Bill Carrico (R-Grayson), who announced he will run for the Senate District 40 seat being vacated by retiring Sen. William Wampler (R-Bristol).
  • House District 7 - Nick Rush, a Republican candidate, announced he'll run for the open seat vacated by Del. Dave Nutter, who is running against Dem. Senator John Edwards.
  • House District 10 - Cara Townsend is the third candidate to announce for the Republican nomination in an open seat in the outer D.C. suburbs of Loudoun, Clarke, and Frederick counties. (This district moved from rural Southside Virginia as a result of redistricting.) Republicans Randy Minchew and John Whitbeck also are running in a GOP primary set for Aug. 23. The winner will face Democrat David Butler.
  • House District 12 - Don Langrehr, a Democrat, will challenge Joseph Yost, a Republican, for this open seat, The incumbent, Del. Jim Shuler (D-Blacksburg), announced his retirement from the General Assembly.
  • House District 13 - Carl Genther is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge GOP incumbent Del. Bob Marshall for this Manassas area seat.
  • House District 17 - Chris Head is seeking the GOP nomination to succeed retiring Del. Bill Cleaveland. In 2009, Head sought the nomination for the open seat Cleaveland won.
  • House District 18 - Michael Webert will vie with fellow Republican Kevin Kelley in an Aug. 23 GOP primary. Todd Benson has withdrawn from the GOP primary. The seat is held by retiring Del. Clay Athey (R-Front Royal).
  • House District 19 - Republican Jerry Johnson and Democrat Lewis Medlin will challenge Del. Lacey Putney, a Bedford County Independent who caucuses with the House Republicans.
  • House District 20 - Democrat Laura Kleiner will challenge GOP incumbent Del. Dickie Bell (R-Staunton).
  • House District 21 - Adrianne Bennett, a Democrat, will challenge GOP Del. Ron Villanueva in this Chesapeake/Virginia Beach district.
  • House District 31 - Roy Coffey, a Democratic candidate, will challenge incumbent Del. Scott Lingamfelter, a Republican.
  • House District 34 - Democrat Pam Danner will challenge GOP incumbent Del. Barbara Comstock (R-McLean).
  • House District 37 - Republican Brian Schoeneman will challenge incumbent Del. David Bulova (D-Fairfax). Prior to redistricting Brian Schoeneman announced he would challenge incumbent Del. Mark Keam (D-Vienna) in the 35th.
  • House District 41- Fredy Burgos, an independent, will challenge Democratic Del. Eileen Filler-Corn.
  • House District 44 - John Barsa, a Republican candidate, will challenge Democratic Del. Scott Surovell.
  • House District 42 - Democrat Jack Dobbyn will challenge incumbent GOP Del. Dave Albo (R-Fairfax).
  • House District 47 - Jennifer Stanley, an Independent Green Party candidate, will challenge incumbent Del. Patrick Hope (D-Arlington).
  • House District 48 - Janet Murphy, an Independent Green candidate, will challenge incumbent Del. Bob Brink, a Democrat.
  • House District 49 - Alfonso Lopez will vie with Stephanie Clifford for the Democratic nomination to succeed Del. Adam Ebbin, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Senate District 30.
  • House District 54 - Matthew Simpson, an independent candidate, will challenge incumbent Del. Bobby Orrock (R-Thornburg) in this Spotsylvania County district.
  • House District 56 - Three more candidates are seeking the Republican nomination for this unexpected open seat: Peter Farrell, founder of an alternative energy company; Jack Manzari, a retired physician; and Surya Dhakar, a dentist. They join David Brat, an economics professor at Randolph-Macon College; Graven Craig, a Louisa personal injury lawyer; and Steven Thomas, Spotsylvania County's GOP Chair. On Tuesday, party leaders from the four localities that make up the 56th District will gather to pick the nominee. (Del. Bill Janis announced he would drop his re-election bid and run instead for Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney.)
  • House District 59 -  Democrat Connie Brennan will face Republican Matt Fariss for the open seat left by retiring Del. Watkins Abbitt, an independent. Republican Evans Thomas and Democrat Jasper Hendricks withdrew from their respective party nomination contests.
  • House District 64 - Richard Morris bested Joseph Waymack for the GOP nomination at a July 23 convention. Morris will face Democratic Del. Bill Barlow (D -Smithfield).
  • House District 67 - Eric Clingan, a Democrat, will challenge Del. Jim LeMunyon in House District 67.
  • House District 75 - Al Peschke is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Del. Roslyn Tyler for this Southside Virginia seat.
  • House District 87 - Jo Ann Chase and David Ramadan are running in an Aug. 23 primary for the GOP nomination for this open seat created in parts of Prince William and Loudoun County in northern Virginia. The winner will face Democrat Michael Kondratick.
  • House District 90 - Rick James will challenge incumbent Del. Algie Howell for the Democratic nomination.
  • House District 93 - Republican Michael Watson will challenge incumbent Del. Robin Abbott, a Democrat. Abbott moved her residence to stay in the redrawn district, which includes Williamsburg and parts of James City County and Newport News.
  • House District 94 - Democrat Gary West announced his run for this open seat. He'll face David Yancey who was selected to replace Del. Glenn Oder as the GOP nominee. Oder announced his retirement from the General Assembly to accept a position as executive director of the Fort Monroe Authority. Democrats are expected to gather Aug. 22 to officially select their nominee.
  • House District 98 - Andrew Shoukas is the first Democrat to announce for this open seat on the Chesapeake Bay. (Del. Harvey Morgan, R-Gloucester is retiring.) Four Republicans -- Sherwood Bowditch  Ken Gibson, Keith Hodges, and Catesby Jones -- are running in an Aug. 23 GOP primary.
  • House District 99 -Nick Smith, a Democrat, will run for the House District 99 seat. Smith will face one of three Republicans - John Lampmann, Margaret Ransone or Dean Sumner - who are running for the GOP nomination in an Aug. 23 primary. The incumbent, Del. Albert Pollard (D-Northern Neck), announced he is retiring. A Democratic candidate has yet to emerge.

Senate of Virginia 

  • Senate District 1 - Republican Mickey Chohany is seeking his party's nomination to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. John Miller (D-Newport News).
  • Senate District 2 - Thomas E. Harmon, IV, a Republican candidate, will challenge incumbent Sen. Mamie Locke (D-Hampton).
  • Senate District 3 - Tea Party Republican Mark Frechette is challenging Sen. Tommy Norment (R-James City County) for the GOP nomination.
  • Senate District 6 - Ben Loyola prevailed over Joanne Lapetina in the July 9 GOP convention. Loyola will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Ralph Northam in the November general election.
  • Senate District 10 - David Bernard, a Democrat, will challenge GOP Senator John Watkins.
  • Senate District 12 - Sen. Walter Stosch dodged a Republican primary challenge. Jane Eshagpoor filed paperwork with the State Board of Elections to challenge Stosch. However, 12th District Republican officials say Eshagpoor failed to submit the required number of petition signatures to qualify for the August 23 primary. As a result, Stosch is uncontested for the GOP nomination.
  • Senate District 13 - Democrat Shawn Mitchell will seek his party's nod for this open seat, which moved from Hampton Roads to the outer suburbs of Northern Virginia. Three Republicans - Dick Black, Robert FitzSimmonds, and John Stirrup - are seeking the GOP nomination in an Aug. 23 primary.
  • Senate District 15 - Gary Thomas, an independent candidate, will challenge incumbent GOP Sen. Frank Ruff (R-Clarksville).
  • Senate District 19 - Former GOP Sen. Brandon Bell has filed to run as an independent, setting up a rematch with Sen. Ralph Smith, who defeated Bell in a 2007 Republican primary. 
  • Senate District 20 - Jeff Evans, who had entered the Republican nomination contest, announced he'll run as an independent. Doug Dunlap withdrew from the GOP nomination contest, leaving freshman Sen. Bill Stanley, who moved into this district to run, unopposed for the Republican nomination. Evans and Stanley will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Roscoe Reynolds (D-Martinsville).
  • Senate District 21 - GOP Del. Dave Nutter will challenge Tea Party activist Tripp Godsey for the Republican nomination in an Aug 23rd primary. The winner will face Democratic Sen. John Edwards.
  • Senate District 22 - Bert Dodson is the lone Democrat to announce for this open seat which stretches from Lynchburg to Goochland County. Five Republicans will vie for their party's nomination in an Aug. 23 primary. The Republican candidates are Brian Bates, a Buckingham County supervisor and Longwood College professor; Tom Garrett, the commonwealth’s attorney in Louisa County; Mark Peake, a Lynchburg attorney; Bryan Rhode, a Goochland resident who works for the Richmond commonwealth's attorney’s; and Claudia Tucker, an Amherst County supervisor an ex-staffer to former Virginia House Speaker Vance Wilkins (R-Amherst).
  • Senate District 25 - TJ Aldous, a Republican candidate, will challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath).
  • Senate District 27 - Shaun Broy, who originally filed as a independent candidate, now will run as a Democrat to challenge Republican Sen. Jill Vogel.
  • Senate District 29 - Republicans nominated Tom Gordy to challenge Sen. Chuck Colgan.
  • Senate District 31 - Jaime Areizaga-Soto will vie with Arlington County Board member Barbara Favola for the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple (D-Arlington).
  • Senate District 32 - Republican Patrick Forrest will challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Janet Howell (D-Reston).
  • Senate District 34 - Republican candidate Gerarda Culipher is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Chap Petersen.
  • Senate District 35 - Katherine Pettigrew, an Independent Green Party candidate, has joined the race.She'll face Republican Robert Sarvis and Democratic incumbent Sen. Dick Saslaw, the Senate Majority Leader.
  • Senate District 36 - Tito Munoz, whose presence at a 2008 McCain Rally earned him notoriety and the nickname "Tito the Builder," will vie with Former Delegate and ex-GOP state party chair Jeff Frederick in the GOP primary for a Senate district that includes portions of Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford counties. The winner will face Democratic Sen. Toddy Puller.
  • Senate District 37 - Republicans Jason Flanary and Steven Hunt are vying for the GOP nomination in an Aug. 23 primary. The winner will face Democratic Sen. Dave Marsden.
  • Senate District 38 - Adam Light, 2010 Republican congressional candidate, is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Phil Puckett. 
  • Senate District 39 - Miller Baker and Scott Martin will vie with each other to be the Republican nominee in an Aug. 23 primary. The winner will face first-term Sen. George Barker (D-Fairfax) in November.
  • Senate District 40 - Democrat John Lamie will challenge Republican Del. Bill Carrico for this open Southwest Virginia seat. Longtime Sen. William Wampler is not seeking re-election.
