Sen. Emmett Hanger announced his reelection campaign Wednesday for the 24th Senate District seat.

Incumbent Sen. Emmett Hanger officially began his reelection campaign for the 24th Senate District race Wednesday, according to a release from Hanger.

Hanger, who has spent 23 years in Virginia Senate, will again seek the Republican nomination for the district seat. He will vie for the party nomination against Tina Freitas in the primary election June 11.

“I believe that when someone stands for reelection it is a time for them to provide an accounting of what they have done during the term that they are completing, the positions they have taken on issues of significance, and importantly to share a plan or areas of focus that they will engage in if elected again,” Hanger said in a release.

Hanger served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1983 to 1992 as well.

The release said Hanger believes he accomplishes tasks in Richmond due to his "willingness to work with representatives of diverse backgrounds and political leanings, to spend the time necessary to understand complex issues and then to work to find the common ground to reach solutions."

During the next six weeks leading to the primary election, the release said Hanger will attempt to share with 24th Senate District residents the following information:

  1. A factual accounting of what he has accomplished as representative during his time in office. Including his voting record and what he is currently working on.
  2. Areas of focus for future work if reelected.
  3. Positions on important issues

"During this past term I have continued my leadership involvement in a number of areas and consider myself to be one of the most active members in the General Assembly on a wide range of issues," Hanger said in a release.

The 24th Senate District represents Augusta County, the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro, parts of Rockingham County, Greene County, Madison County and parts of Culpeper County.
