Chair Candidates

From left, Loudoun County chair candidates Bob Ohneiser, an independent, incumbent Phyllis Randall (D) and Republican nominee John Whitbeck.

Challengers John Whitbeck and Robert Ohneiser—standing on opposite sides of the stage—spent 90 minutes in Leesburg on Oct. 9 making their case to become the next chair of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.

Could Randall be more of a partisan hack? Omit the TDS. Focus on your constituency, not the mainstream media narrative.

Cowbell, I do own a home and yes, my taxes have increased every year but so has the rate. They passed a budget that will lower the rate drastically for next year. I don’t know, in fact have never even met, Randall, sorry to burst your bubble. I’m sure if we are discussing things about the BOS you and I and most of the people on this thread are saying some of the same phrases. The pay raise is not all that great.

I don’t know what you mean about “Not one of them on current or past Boards was ever asked to run”, they are usually asked by their party. People don’t go into politics to make a lot of money. This article says that the median household income was $139,915 in 2018. That raise would still take her to $$81,100, in 2020. Still $58,815 less than the median of 2 years ago. It’s nice to say to start at a smaller raise but they don’t get raises very often in fact after that she will only get 2% for 3 years. It is very limited. Why would you expect them to be volunteers? Do you think only the independently wealth should hold office? They deserve a working wage for what they are doing. It isn’t a 40 hour a week job, it takes much more time than that. It isn’t an 8-5 job, even if that is when their offices are open. They still need to have meetings, townhalls. How could they be making more than you think when the pay scale is easily found. Under the new pay rate, the next board, excluding the chair and vice chair, will be paid, which is up from the current $41,200. The vice chair will be paid $73,363, up from $45,320, and the chair will make $81,100.

As far as people who work for her, why does that matter? If you go on her site, she has 3 aides, Bo Machayo, (also her chief of staff) Laura TeKrony, and Elizabeth Bennis

They decided to run. I didn't say to Randall please run because you have great ideas....They decided to run. It's their ego, they think they're right, very few if any even listen to their constituents. No, we don't say the same things. You keep posting about the rate being lowered. Rate doesn't mean anything if my assessed value goes up, means my taxes go up again. Maybe they don't initially but in the end, 90% of all politicians leave rich/millionaires. Locally for some is first step, then state and maybe federal. So these part timers will be making more than police, teachers, fire....I won't be voting for anyone that voted for BOS raise.

As an Independent, I'm against anyone voting for that big of a raise, which is what Randall pushed for. And everyone, including Republicans that backed it, should be voted out. Start with a 10-15% raise, and cut out waste. In addition, whenever I email BOS, Randall is the only one that doesn't respond. She must have 5-10 people working for her because I always get a different person responding for her emails.

Don't just read the article - watch the video. Randall tried to take full credit for teachers getting paid more and drug court. Judge Horne wrote the original drug court plan not Phyllis. The school board designed the budget to pay teachers more not Phyllis. All three of us pledged to serve full time BUT is it believable that John (who is a VERY talented lawyer) can manage a 7 lawyer law firm, practice law full time AND serve full time as Chair. Is it possible that part of that strategy is to build a larger law firm over the next four years with recusals to avoid obvious conflicts with the business of the County? If developers are already pumping in hundreds of thousands in campaign donations would anyone be surprised if they set up legal retainers too.

Watch the video! :-)

Why doesn't Whitbeck attack his fellow Republicans that also voted and supported the BOS raise for next year? 3 of them also voted for it and the Broad Run candidate also spoke in favor of it while he was head of the LoCo Repubs. Teachers, first responders and county workers received yearly raises while the BOS didn't. Teacher salaries are very comparable to the region while the current BOS salary isn't.

Whitbeck may be the first candidate to publicly support RSO's for all schools but Sheriff Chapman never asked the BOS for elementary school RSO's during the past 4 years. He waited to make it a campaign issue with Whitbeck. Chapman also had the opportunity several times to add the RSO's to this years budget and refused to ask for them. Great video of that discussion from the March 11th budget meeting discussing that.

RSOs provide no real additional security and will just lead to what should be normal school discipline situations becoming criminal ones.

Not only should elementary school RSOs not be added but the complete waste of educational time and money DARE program eliminated. At the very least it should be treated as Family Life Education is and parents should be able to opt their children out of DARE since while no studies have shown it to reduce drug usage some have shown it to slightly increase the rate of drug use.

amerigirl

How do you know that DARE has not kept the amount of drug use down? Is there anything to compare it to? I know it had a strong impact on my kids, very thankful for that. I think with the opiate crisis it would be a bad time to end DARE

Nice article Nate, that’s the way the debate went! It is good to see clear honest journalism.

Notwithstanding Chairman Randall’s unique support for unfettered toll increases until 2056 and voting for a 62% salary increase that will benefit her should she be re-elected, I am bothered by her concern over the “Trump effect” on Loudoun. She is apparently able to ignore the current unemployment rate of 3.8%, HISTORIC low unemployment numbers for backs and Hispanics, a welcome 3% increase in median household income and an additional 6.2 million people being lifted out of poverty and off of food stamps. She seems remarkably out of touch with the current economic reality.

DaPark

Trump can thank Obama for that historic low rate since he inherited that downward trend from Obama. A simple google search of yearly unemployment rates will prove that.

Why aren't you attacking Buffington, Letourneau and Meyers for also voting in favor of the long overduepay increase? Why not attack Bonfils for speaking in favor of it?

Good Guy

Randall’s totally partisan; facts be damned. And, she is the racist, because she hurls false charges of racism based on a warped world view. Trump was right to tell black Americans to take a chance with him. Dems and their policies fail all Americans. It’s refreshing to see how Trump and Republican policies lift everyone up. Dems thrive on radical divisiveness. That’s all they’ve got.

Not facts like Ellie. Just bitterness, animosity, and obstruction for three years. Phyllis needs to get her campaign out of the gutter.

amerigirl

Give an example on Randall to back up your statement. Trump has only lifted the rich. How has he lifted anyone else up? You have nothing but made up republican talking points.

Eight years without a pay raise? I wouldn’t stay at a job if they did that to me. Their current salaries are $50,000 for the chair, $45,320 for the vice chair and $41,200 for the other supervisors. That is really low, and embarrassing wage for an executive in this county. Being a public servant is one thing, but dedicating yourself should not be a financial hardship on your family, and it takes up much more than 40 hours a week. The unemployment rate has been on a steady decline in all those categories since Obama pulled us out of the recession, just as the economy has steadily been improving since then. Social Security has had the biggest impact, keeping 27 million people above the poverty level, and trump wants to get rid of it. He really doesn’t care about poor elderly or disables people and will keep trying cut their benefits. To say we are not feeling the trump effect in Loudoun either means you live in a lily-white neighborhood or are ignoring it. Guess you didn’t any of those KKK fliers in your driveway.

Not one of them on current or past Boards was ever asked to run. Are they doing it for the money? Gives the appearance. I say all these positions should be volunteers. Too much corruption in the 30 years with BOS and developers. They're making more money then you think.
