A candidate for state Senate in Chesapeake and Suffolk says despite what she’d previously told the newspaper, she’s still running for the seat.

Rebecca Raveson, the Democrat challenging Republican Sen. John Cosgrove in the 14th Senate District this November, told The Virginian-Pilot in an email Oct. 15 she was withdrawing from the race after raising objections to the paper publishing her age.

She also wrote an email to an editor Oct. 17 saying she was contemplating withdrawing.

After an article about the race was published online Tuesday night, she said in an email she was not withdrawing and expects to win the election.

The 14th Senate District also includes parts of Southampton, Franklin, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. Cosgrove has held the seat since 2014.

All 140 seats in the General Assembly are up for election this year. Republicans hold a 20-19 majority in the Senate and a 51-48 majority in the House, with one vacancy in each chamber.
