Sen. Emmett Hanger looks at election results showing he was re-elected to the 24th District.

Incumbent senator Emmett Hanger won re-election easily over Democratic challenger Annette Hyde Tuesday night for the 24th Senate seat.

Hanger took more than 70% of the vote.

“I’m really pleased with the outcome of the election and thankful for the support," Hanger told The News Leader, surrounded by his supporters at Armstrong's in Verona. "It really is a pleasure for me to continue to represent this area.”

Hanger has served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1983 to 1992 before being elected to the Senate. During his time in office, Hanger has worked on bills to end gerrymandering and expand Medicaid, and he supports improving rural broadband.

He is co-chair of the Senate Finance Committee and chair of the Health and Human Services Finance subcommittee. Hanger voted to approve ratification for the ERA in 2019 and said he would vote for it again.
