841 new coronavirus cases reported in Virginia, percentage of positive tests continues trending down

Virginia officials reported 841 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, according to the state’s department of health.

Tuesday’s update brings the state total to 46,239 cases. Of those, 44,069 are confirmed and 2,170 are probable.

The seven-day rate of positive tests for the state is 11.5%, not including antibody tests. It’s been declining steadily.

Following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Gov. Ralph Northam has said he wants to see a 14-day downward trend in the percentage of positive coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, as well as an increase in the number of tests and personal protective equipment available between each phase before moving forward.

So far, 328,889 tests have been given, not including antibody tests. About 6,300 tests were given in the past 24 hours.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 is 1,362, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, down 9 from Monday. Of those patients, 912 have tested positive and 450 are awaiting test results. It’s fewer positive patients than Monday, with more waiting for results. So far, 6,011 patients with the virus have been discharged after being hospitalized, about 112 more than Monday.

There have been 1,407 deaths, a rise of 15 reported overnight.

In southeastern Virginia, Accomack County on the Eastern Shore continues to lead the region in cases, with 939, up 22 from Monday. 12 have died.

Elsewhere in Hampton Roads, here are the latest numbers, compared to Monday:

Virginia Beach: 752 cases, (up 7); 23 deaths (no change)

Chesapeake: 541 (up 6); 15 deaths (no change)

Norfolk: 530 (up 9); 6 deaths (no change)

Portsmouth: 325 (up 12); 11 deaths (no change)

Suffolk: 317 cases,(up 1); 33 deaths (up 1)

Hampton: 212 cases (up 2); 3 deaths (no change)

Newport News: 291 (up 9); 10 deaths (no change)

James City County: 210 (up 4); 15 deaths (no change)

Isle of Wight: 132 cases (up 4); 3 deaths (no change)

Northampton County: 243 (up 2), 23 deaths (no change)

Poquoson: 8 cases (no change); no deaths

York: 77 cases (no change); 3 deaths (no change)

Williamsburg: 44 cases (no change); 4 deaths (no change)

Mathews: 5 cases (no change); no deaths

Middlesex: 15 cases (no change); no deaths

Gloucester: 31 cases (no change); 1 death (no change)

The number of cases reported in long-term care facilities statewide is 4,973 and they account for 796 deaths (up 11), according to the VDH.

Virginians older than 80 have the highest number of deaths, with 736. There are 2,794 cases. Here is how the age groups break down across the state:

70-79: 2,546 cases, 345 deaths

60-69: 4,925 cases, 201 deaths

50-59: 7,364 cases, 81 deaths

40-49: 8,531 cases, 31 deaths

30-39: 8,482 cases, 9 deaths

20-29: 7,276 cases,, 3 deaths

10-19: 2,550 cases, no deaths

0-9: 1,318 cases, no deaths

Across the state, 23,081 women have COVID-19 and 684 women have died. A total of 22,690 men have COVID-19 and 707 have died. In addition, 16 deaths did not have a reported sex and 468 cases did not have a reported sex.

The rate of positive tests for each of the health districts in southeastern Virginia is:

Virginia Beach: 3% (up)

Norfolk: 7.1% (down)

Chesapeake: 9.3% (no change)

Portsmouth: 6.1% (down)

Western Tidewater: 3,9% (down)

Eastern Shore: 16.3% (up)

Hampton: 5.7% (down)

Peninsula: 3.8% (up)
