A ransomware attack on the Hampton Roads Sanitation District’s computer network is affecting all of its customers because the billing system is down.

The attack, which occurred on Nov. 17, resulted in the entire network being taken offline, which included suspending the billing system, said HRSD spokeswoman Leila Rice.

She couldn’t offer a lot of details on the ransomware attack because it’s still an active investigation.

HRSD’s phone and computer systems are offline and inaccessible while the incident is resolved. She didn’t have an estimate when everything would be restored.

Customers who have paid their bills won’t see the payments posted until the systems are back, she said. Also, customers won’t incur late fees or interest on delayed payments. Customers who have already made payments should disregard messages related to delinquent or unpaid bills.

Anyone who wants to pay bills in person, with cash, may do so weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 1434 Air Rail Ave. in Virginia Beach. Bills also may be paid by phone by calling 844-257-6063 or paid online here. Urgent billing questions should be emailed to askhrsd@gmail.com.
