Fairfax County took a step Tuesday toward requiring its 12,500 employees to be vaccinated for the coronavirus, becoming the first locality in the Washington region to join government agencies elsewhere in the country that are seeking to respond more aggressively to a new surge in infections.

In a unanimous vote, the Board of Supervisors in Virginia’s most populous locality asked County Executive Bryan J. Hill to evaluate how to incorporate a vaccine requirement when employees fully return to their workplaces in the fall.
