Jennifer Lewis won the Democratic nomination for the 6th district of Virginia in Tuesday’s primary election.

Tim Kaine, Virginia's current Democratic Senator, was the first to call to congratulate her, Josh Stanfield, Lewis' campaign manager said.

"I will remember this for the rest of my life," Lewis said about Kaine calling her.

Lewis said she's ready for her next challenge, facing Ben Cline, the Republican nominee, in November’s general election. Cline was chosen as the Republican nominee at the district convention on May 19.

"As we've been traveling the 6th district for this race, people are ready for bold, progressive change," Lewis said.

She won Augusta County with 49.95 percent of the vote, Staunton with 71.11 percent of the vote and Waynesboro with 80.52 percent of the vote.

As a resident of Waynesboro, Lewis felt enormous support from her community Tuesday.

"To see that support from my own home city was just so heart-warming," Lewis said.

Lewis and her team went door to door Tuesday canvassing for today's election. Lewis knocked on 470 doors in Staunton alone, she said.

Lewis hopes her message of returning power to the people and fighting for them will spread as they continue canvassing for the general election.

"We're not focusing on just democrats, it's going to take more than democrats for me to win," she said.

Corey Stewart won the Republican nomination for the Senate race. He faces Tim Kaine, Virginia’s current Senator in November.

"I felt great because Virginia chose who was going to support the president," Stewart said. "There's more support for President Trump in Virginia than there was two years ago."

Stewart added he wants to support President Trump making the tax cuts permanent, selling American made goods and supporting the construction of the U.S. and Mexico border wall.

Stewart clinched the nomination in a close race against Nick Freitas. Freitas was just 1 percent behind Stewart in votes.

Stewart won Staunton with 57.01 percent of the vote, Augusta County with 60.32 percent of the vote and Waynesboro with 47.45 percent of the vote.
