Ben Cline, Republican nominee for the 6th district of Virginia congressional seat, leads his walking tour through Staunton Saturday Aug. 4.

A red pickup truck fashioned with an American flag bumper sticker rhythmically honked as it passed Ben Cline Saturday afternoon.

Cline met the honk with a wave — sleeves rolled up in attempt to stay cool during his “Summer of the Walk” tour in Staunton. About 13 supporters, including government officials and local supporter, trailed behind him hoisting signs claiming “I’m with Ben!”

Cline and his supporters walked from Obaugh GMC, 410 Lee Jackson Highway to Wright's Dairy Rite at 346 Greenville Ave., where they shared lunch and ice cream.

Along the way, Cline stopped at a car show,  Nuckols Gun Works, the Valley Children's Advocacy Center and Kline’s Dairy Bar.

This summer, Cline has been making his way through the 6th district of the Virginia to walk and discuss issues with voters.

Ben Cline, Republican nominee for the 6th district of Virginia congressional seat, greets voters at a car show during his "Summer of the Walk" tour in Staunton.

“It shows how hard of a worker he is,” said Augusta County Supervisor Marshall Pattie, who represents the North River District.

Pattie came out to show his support because he likes Cline’s voting record he’s built in Virginia House of Delegates.

With Cline’s experience, Pattie thinks he can be an effective legislator for the 6th district.

Cline represents the 24th district in the Virginia House of Delegates, where he was first elected to the chamber in a special election in 2002. He was re-elected to a new term in 2017.

Cline was elected as the Republican nominee for the 6th district at the Republican Convention in May.

He faces Democratic nominee, Jennifer Lewis of Waynesboro, in the November election.

“I’m running to represent the 6th district and their concerns in Washington,” Cline said as he waved to a few cars honking in support of the walking crowd.

Cline said he enjoys learning the issues throughout the communities in the 6th district.

Voters have told Cline that they’re concerned about energy prices, healthcare, immigration and more, he said.

"I think Ben's going to do a great job for the 6th district," said Staunton resident Amy Darby as she held an American flag and walked. "He has a strong voice."
