Cline leads the fundraising race while Lewis sees heavy small donor support

State Del. Ben Cline R-24 holds the lead in fundraising for the 6th district of Virginia federal congressional race.

Cline leads with a significant portion of his individual contributions coming from donations in the size of $2,000 or more. But Democratic nominee Jennifer Lewis of Waynesboro had many of her donations come from individual contributions of $200 or less. In November, one of the candidates will take congressman Bob Goodlatte's seat, which he has held since 1992.

Cline raised $393,628 in donations between October 2017 and June 2018. Here’s a closer look at where the money flowed from.

A significant amount came from those who donated $2,000 or more, making up $131,250 of his campaign funds. Most of the individual donations for Cline came in an amount of $1,000 or more.

The geographical location of donors for Cline's campaign varies throughout the U.S.

The majority of the funds came from Virginia. A significant $6,250 in donations came from the District of Columbia. The farthest western state to donate to his congressional campaign was Idaho with $250 in donations.

Looking at donors by employment status, the Cline for Congress committee had a significant amount of money coming from people who are retired. That group donated $74,350 to Cline’s congressional campaign. The next highest group of donors was self-employed individuals, who donated $17,300, according to the FEC.

Lewis’ campaign raised $67,778.71 between February and June 30.

Close to half of the donations for Lewis were $200 or less — comprising $31,510.72 of a total given to her campaign between February and June 2018.

Lewis received two individual donations from California totaling $550, according to the FEC.

The next highest donation from a state other than Virginia came from New York, where people donated a total of $750. She also received donations from Georgia and Illinois.

Lewis received support from Washington, D.C., as it did for Cline. She received $850 in individual donations from the district.

Looking at donors by employment status, the Friends of Jennifer Lewis committee had a significant $5,250 come from individuals listed as retired. The committee also received donations from small business owners, a video producer, a co op manager and a radio journalist for Allegheny Mountain Radio.
