Surovell chosen Minority Whip in the Virginia Senate

A Virginia State Senator representing Prince William and Stafford counties was chosen Minority Caucus Whip.

Scott Surovell (D-36) will replace the outgoing Jennifer Wexton, who was elected to Congress earlier this month, as the Democratic caucus whip.

“I’m honored and humbled that my colleagues would entrust me with this leadership position,” Surovell states in a press release. “Last year was my most successful legislative session yet and I look forward to continuing to work within our caucus and across the aisle to advance policies that lift up all Virginians.  Going into the next election cycle, we are poised for significant action this year on the structure of our tax system, investments in education equity, and funding to clean up Virginia’s coal ash problem.”

Last week, Surovell joined other Richmond legislators who lined up in front of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors to put pressure on the governing body to support a ratification of the 40-year-old Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Board failed to support the amendment’s ratification.

Surovell is a soldier for the Democrats, noting in his press release that he successfully recruited candidates and helped turn four delegate seats held by Republican legislators to Democratic control.

Prior to being elected to the Senate in 2016, Surovell served as Caucus Chairman as an elected member of the House of Delegate from 2011 to 2014.

The 36th State Senate District includes portions of Fairfax, eastern Prince William, and Stafford counties.
