House special election pits political veteran, business leader

Voters who show up for a little-noticed Democratic primary tonight will nominate either a political veteran looking for another act in public office or a relative newcomer to politics for a Norfolk-based General Assembly seat. Whichever of those two women emerges victorious - former City Council member Daun S. Hester or TowneBank executive Yvonne Allmond - will be in prime position to claim the open 89th House District when its next occupant is chosen in a Dec. 18 special election.

Norfolk Democrats set event to pick House candidate

Norfolk Democrats have called an Oct. 17 "firehouse primary" to select a nominee for a special election later this year to fill the vacant 89th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. So far, three candidates have announced plans to run: TowneBank executive Yvonne Allmond; former Norfolk City Council member Daun S. Hester; and Lionell Spruill Jr., whose father represents Chesapeake in the House of Delegates.

Del. Alexander's empty seat attracting interest

Would-be successors to the state House legislative seat being vacated by Norfolk Sen.-elect Kenny Alexander are stacking up. Among those said to be considering bids are Lionell Spruill Jr., the son of Chesapeake Del. Lionell Spruill Sr.; former Norfolk City Councilwoman Daun Hester; and Towne Bank Senior Vice President Yvonne Allmond.
