MURPHY EDGES PARISOT AGAIN TO CLINCH 34TH DISTRICT DELEGATE SEAT

Del. Kathleen Murphy (D-34th) continued her trend of winning nail-biter elections Nov. 3, narrowly defeating Republican challenger Craig Parisot again. According to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections, Murphy received 10,812 votes, or 50.41 percent, versus 10,621 votes (49.52 percent) for Parisot. There also were 16 write-in ballots cast in the election.

Republican Craig Parisot, who lost to Democrat Kathleen Murphy by just 326 votes in a snowy Jan. 6 special election to succeed former Del. Barbara Comstock (R-34th), announced today that he will challenge Murphy again in the Nov. 3 election. “The support and effort of so many during the special election was truly humbling,” Parisot said in a media statement. “It’s with their encouragement and continued support that I am happy to say I will once again run for delegate.”

Democrat Kathleen Murphy has raised nearly twice as much as Republican Craig Parisot in their battle to represent the 34th District in the Virginia House of Delegates, according to campaign disclosure reports made available Tuesday. In what could be among the most expensive special elections for a state seat in recent history, Murphy has raised nearly $438,000 since November, while Parisot collected nearly $229,000. About 1,130 donors gave to Murphy and 320 donors contributed to Parisot, who also lent his campaign $32,000, the reports showed.
