After a driver hit a young trick-or-treater on Russell Road in Alexandria nearly two years ago, residents complained to City Hall about speeding vehicles that had caused scores of accidents on the street. The only official who responded, they say, was Vice Mayor Allison Silberberg (D). She worked to get speed bumps installed, and they have slowed traffic considerably. She also contacted the injured 7-year-old and his family to check on his recovery.

Incumbent Mayor William D. Euille, vice mayor Allison Silberberg and former mayor Kerry Donley, speaking before more than 100 people at the Alexandria Democratic Committee’s debate at Francis Hammond Middle School, battled over who to blame for the decision that let the Defense Department build a high-rise along I-395 at Seminary Road, whether the city moved has fast enough to get a Potomac Yard Metro station underway, and what it will take to improve the city’s finances, among other issues.

The first faceoff between the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for Alexandria’s mayor heated up Thursday over an issue that all three agreed upon — the historic City Hall and Market Square plaza are not for sale. Allison Silberberg, the vice mayor in her first term on the City Council, attacked Mayor William D. Euille for speculating to a weekly newspaper last summer that one way to deal with the estimated $56 million in repairs needed for the 144-year-old structure would be to sell it and move the seat of government west.

SILBERBERG JOINS ALEXANDRIA DEMOCRATIC MAYORAL PRIMARY RACE

Allison Silberberg, Alexandria’s vice mayor, said she plans to enter the city’s Democratic mayoral primary on June 9, challenging incumbent mayor William Euille and former mayor Kerry Donley. Silberberg, 51, an author who is currently writing a book for the Society for Women’s Health Research, said she will support “thoughtful, appropriate development” and continue to protect neighborhoods and the Old Town historic district.

The Democrats have 14 candidates battling for six nominations to be decided by a primary June 12. That’s also the deadline for any independent candidate to register.
