Who says you don't get older, you just get better? The Peninsula House of Delegates team lost some in the seniority stakes for the 2016 General Assembly session. While several House members moved up the seniority ladder, that didn’t offset the impact of the retirement of Del. Mamye BaCote, D-Newport News, who was the 28th most senior member last year.

PRICE TAKES 95TH DISTRICT SEAT

Democrat Marcia "Cia" Price will be the next 95th District delegate, easily defeating Independent Pricillia Burnett, with nearly 76 percent of the vote to succeed retiring Del. Mamye BaCote, D-Newport News. Complete unofficial results from the State Board of Elections are Marcia Price, 4,654; Pricillia Burnett, 1,417.

ANOTHER CANDIDATE FOR BACOTE'S SEAT

Pricillia Burnett, the former Newport News School Board member and retired police officer who has also run for mayor and sheriff in the last decade, has thrown her hat into the ring for retiring Del. Mamye BaCote's seat. Burnett said Wednesday that she has filed paperwork to run as an independent in the 95th House of Delegates district. She said she hopes election officials will process her paperwork and confirm her candidacy by week's end.

PENINSULA RACES SHAPING UP FOR VIRGINIA SENATE, HOUSE SEATS; PRICE UNOPPOSED

The local elections slate for General Assembly seats is coming together, and Marcia Price was the only Democrat who put in for retiring Del. Mamye BaCote's seat in Newport News. Given the 95th District's Democratic tendencies — and the absence, at least for now, of Republican or other competition — Price has excellent odds for the open seat.

BACOTE INTRODUCES SEVERAL BILLS

Guns and books don’t necessarily mix, according to Del. Mamye BaCote, D. Newport News, who has introduced a bill that lets cities, counties and towns enact ordinances that prohibit firearms and ammunition in their libraries. BaCote also suggests money deposited in the Hampton Roads Transportation Fund should be available for public transportation purposes. It is now limited to new construction projects for highways, bridges, and tunnels.

NEWPORT NEWS DELEGATE BACOTE LIKELY TO RETIRE POST-SESSION

Del. Mamye BaCote, who represents parts of Hampton and Newport News in the Virginia House of Delegates, likely won't stand for re-election this year, she said Thursday. BaCote said she hasn't made a final decision, but that she "probably won't" run again. She said during the 2013 elections that this would likely be her last term, and on Thursday BaCote said she'd like to see her grandsons play basketball more often.

For the first time since 2005 Del. Mamye BaCote, D-Newport News, will face a Republican challenger in the general election. John Bloom, a U.S. Navy veteran and a nuclear engineer at Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding, filed to run as a Republican in the contest for the 95th House of Delegates District on Tuesday – the last day to submit paperwork to the State Board of Elections.
