In addition to the high-profile race for governor and other statewide races, Virginia voters will be asked to weigh in on a flurry of competitive races farther down the ballot: House of Delegate seats are also up for grabs Tuesday. This election features more competitive House races than at any time in the past two decades, and analysts say the usually local, low-key races are shaping up to be an early barometer of the national political climate nearly a year into Donald Trump’s presidency.

A handful of Republican candidates challenging Democratic incumbents in Northern Virginia are taking a surprising stand on closing the gun show loophole, which allows unlicensed gun dealers to sell firearms without a background check. Republican challengers to Alfonso Lopez, Kathleen Murphy and Jennifer Boysko. They all say they would vote in favor of closing the gun show loophole. So would Lolita Mancheno-Smoak, the Republican running to fill the seat vacated by retiring Delegate Dave Albo.

Until this year, three-term Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-49) has never had a Republican opponent. Back in 2011, he beat Democrat Stephanie Clifford in a primary fight to win the open seat vacated by Adam Ebbin, who is now in the state Senate. And he faced Independent Green Terry Modglin in 2013. But he’s never faced a Republican. Until now.

Could the dearth of candidates fielded this year by the Arlington County Republican Committee actually end up helping the lone local GOPer on the ballot? That’s the aim of Adam Roosevelt, the Republican nominee taking on Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-49th). Roosevelt told GOP rank-and-file on July 26 that if he can get countywide financial and volunteer support, he could upend Lopez, even though the district is seen as solidly Democratic.

Incumbent Democrat Alfonso Lopez maintains a significant cash-on-hand advantage over his Republican challenger in the 49th House District, the only competitive legislative race in Arlington this year. Lopez had $24,429 on hand at the end of the most recent filing period in late June, according to figures reported by Virginia Public Access Project. That compares to $1,186 for Adam Roosevelt.
