This election features more competitive House races than at any time in the past two decades, and analysts say the usually local, low-key races are shaping up to be an early barometer of the national political climate nearly a year into Donald Trump’s presidency.

SURPRISING NUMBER OF GOP CANDIDATES IN FAVOR OF CLOSING GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE

A handful of Republican candidates challenging Democratic incumbents in Northern Virginia are taking a surprising stand on closing the gun show loophole, which allows unlicensed gun dealers to sell firearms without a background check. Republican challengers to Alfonso Lopez, Kathleen Murphy and Jennifer Boysko. They all say they would vote in favor of closing the gun show loophole. So would Lolita Mancheno-Smoak, the Republican running to fill the seat vacated by retiring Delegate Dave Albo.

When freshman Democrat Del. Jennifer Boysko (D-86) introduced a bill she calls Whole Woman’s Health Act, she hoped it would provide women with a fundamental right to an abortion. No statute or regulation would have been able to restrict a woman’s access to an abortion. But that’s not what happened. Instead, the House Courts of Justice dismissed the bill without giving it a hearing.
