DEMOCRAT DAUN HESTER WINS NORFOLK TREASURER RACE

Daun Hester, a Democratic state delegate, was easily elected Norfolk treasurer Tuesday night, outpacing three other candidates. With 78 percent of precincts reporting, Hester had 54 percent of the votes to 18 percent for independent Matt Hales, 14 percent for independent Nicole Sanders and 13 percent for Republican Michael Voogd.

JONES WINS VIRGINIA HOUSE OF DELEGATES 89TH DISTRICT

As the younger Jones grew older, he landed a gig as a General Assembly page and later worked in the offices of former Dels. Paula Miller and Angie Howell.

Jerrauld “Jay” Jones, a 28-year-old lawyer whose father represented the district for 14 years as a delegate, won in his first foray into politics. With nearly 80 percent of precincts reporting, Jones had a 2-to-1 margin over Joe Dillard in the 89th House District Democratic primary.

PROSECUTOR CONCLUDES MONEY OFFERED TO POTENTIAL HOUSE OF DELEGATES CANDIDATE NOT ILLEGAL

An offer of campaign money to a potential House of Delegates candidate in Norfolk to run for school board did not violate state law, a special prosecutor concluded Friday. Joe Dillard Jr. is one of two candidates in the June 13 Democratic primary for the seat of Del. Daun Sessoms Hester, D-Norfolk, who is running for city treasurer.

Eight House members won’t be running again, seven Republicans and one Democrat. Of those seven open Republican seats, Hillary Clinton won four of those districts — an indication that they might be pickup opportunities for Democrats. Quentin Kidd at Christopher Newport University says those four open Republican seats are part of a larger set of races Democrats are intensely focused on.
