Early Voting by Party

One month into early voting, the share of likely Democratic and Republican voters remains largely unchanged from two weeks ago. Republican voters have narrowed the lopsided, in-person lead that Democrats held at the same point in voting last year. But Democrats continue to dominate voting by mail.

Source: Virginia Department of Elections data listing the names and voter ID of those who have cast ballots in advance of the November 2 general election. The data is as of 19 days before the election (as of October 14, 2021 and October 15, 2020). Virginia does not require voter registration by party. VPAP matched the voter IDs in the DOE file with data provided by L2 Political, which has an algorithm that estimates the likely party of voters, based on factors such as past participation in primary elections.
