Warner's Evolving Coalition

The widening gap between rural and urban Virginia can be seen in the results of Mark Warner's five statewide elections over the last two and a half decades. In his first race in 1996, more than one in five votes received by Warner, a Democrat, came from rural areas in Southwest and Southside Virginia. This year, only one in 10 votes he received came from those regions. Over the same time, Warner has become much more reliant on voters in the suburbs of Washington, DC.
