New Virginia Candidates


In the last week, VPAP has added 11 names to its unofficial lists of candidates running for State Senate and House of Delegates. Also included below are 10 more legislators who announced in the last week that they would not seek re-election in November.

SD 9 Special Election

Two candidates have been selected to run in a March 21 special election to fill the remainder of Congresswomen-elect Jennifer McClellan.

Del. Lamont Bagby (D-Henrico), who won the Democratic firehouse primary on Sunday, and Republican Steve Imholt will run in the old district lines of SD 9, which were in place before the Supreme Court of Virginia drew new district boundaries to be used in general elections this November.

The old SD 9 includes portions of the counties of Hanover, Henrico and Charles City, and part of the City of Richmond.VPAP rates the district strongly Democratic. Democrats won three of every four votes cast in SD9 during congressional midterms last fall.

 

General Elections

State Senate

Senate District 4

Sen. John Edwards (D-Roanoke) announced that he would not seek re-election. He had been paired in this district with Sen. Dave Suetterlein (R-Salem), who is the only candidate so far. SD 4 includes Roanoke and Salem cities, as well as portions of Roanoke and Montgomery counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 54.7% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 26

Senate Minority Leader Tommy Norment (R-Williamsburg) announced that he would not seek re-election. He had been paired in this district with fellow Republican Sen. Ryan McDougle (R-Mechanicsville), who so far is the only remaining candidate. SD 26 includes Gloucester, Mathews, and New Kent counties, as well as parts of Hanover, James City, and King & Queen counties. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 64.2% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 32

Sen. John Bell (D-Chantilly) announced that he would not seek re-election. Del. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Sterling) announced that he would seek the Democratic nomination. Greg Moulthrop (R) previously entered the race in this Loudoun County district. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 60.2% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 38

Sen. Janet Howell (D-Reston) announced that she would not seek re-election. She had been paired in this district with fellow Democrat Sen. Jennifer Boysko (D-Herndon), who is running, along with Matthew Lang (R). SD 38 includes part of Fairfax County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 65.7% of the vote in November 2021.
 

House of Delegates

House District 7

Karen Keys-Gamarra is the fifth Democrat to announce after the current delegate with the longest service, Del. Ken Plum (D-Reston), decided not to seek re-election. Keys-Gamarra joins Mary Barthelson, Paul Berry, John Farrell, and Shyamali Hauth in seeking the Democratic nomination. So far, no Republican candidate has announced. In November 2021, Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 69.2% of the vote in the district that includes part of Fairfax County.

House District 22

Travis Nembhard is the first Democrat to announce. Ian Lovejoy (R) is also running in this Prince William County district. VPAP rates HD22 a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 53.2% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 31

Del. Wendy Gooditis (D-Clarke) announced that she would not seek re-election. Republican Delores Oates had already entered the race. HD 31 includes all of Clarke County, and parts of Warren and Frederick Counties. VPAP rates this a “strong Republican” district where voters gave Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin an estimated 67.6% of the vote in the November 2021 governor's race.

House District 36

Del. John Avoli (R-Staunton) announced that he would not seek re-election. He had been paired in this district with fellow Republican Del. Ellen Campbell (R-Rockbridge), who so far is the only candidate running. HD 36 includes Staunton and Waynesboro, as well as portions of Augusta and Rockbridge counties. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 63.5% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 49

Del. James Edmunds (R-South Boston) announced that he would not seek re-election. He had been paired in this district with fellow Republican Del. Danny Marshall (R-Danville), who is the only candidate so far. HD 49 includes Danville and portions of Halifax and Pittsylvania counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 59.5% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 52

Del. Kathy Byron (R-Lynchburg) announced that she would not seek re-election. She had been paired in the district with fellow Republican Del. Wendell Walker (R-Lynchburg), who is the only candidate remaining in the race. HD52 includes Lynchburg and part of Campbell County. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 57.6% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 53

Tim Griffin is the second candidate seeking the Republican nomination. Sarah Mays (R) and Sam Soghor (D) are also running in the district that includes Amherst County and portions of Bedford and Nelson counties. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 73.3% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 65

Michael Kasey is the second candidate seeking the Republican nomination. Lee Peters (R) and former delegate Joshua Cole (D) are also running. HD 65 includes Fredericksburg and portions of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. VPAP rates this a "competitive" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 51% of the vote last November.

House District 67

Del. Margaret Ransone (R-Kinsale) announced that she would not seek re-election. Republican Hillary Pugh Kent announced that she would run and is the only candidate in the race. HD 67 includes part of Caroline County and all of Lancaster, King George, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland counties. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 64.3% of the vote last November.

House District 72

Bilal Raychouni is the first candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Del. Lee Ware (R-Powhatan) is running for re-election in the district that includes Amelia, Nottoway, and Powhatan counties, as well as part of Chesterfield County. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 66.9% of the vote last November.

House District 73

Del. Roxann Robinson (R-Chesterfield) announced that she would not seek re-election. Two candidates, Mark Earley Jr. and Ryan Harter, had already announced that they would seek the Republican nomination in the Chesterfield County district. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 57.1% of the vote last November.

House District 80

Del. Lamont Bagby (D-Henrico) is heavily favored to win a special election to the State Senate later this month, which would open up this “strong Democratic” district. Democrat John Dantzler is running in this Henrico County district, which VPAP estimates that  Democrat Terry McAuliffe carried with an estimated 73.5% of the vote in November 2021.
