UPDATED: New State Candidates

UPDATE: APRIL 4

State Senate

State Senator Harry Blevins announced his retirement from the General Assembly.

Blevins, a Republican from Chesapeake, has represented Senate District 14 for 12 years. He previously served in the House of Delegates from 1988-2001.

The governor is expected to schedule the special election for early August, when Blevins will vacate the seat.

Immediately following the announcement, Republican Del. John Cosgrove entered the race to succeed Blevins. Cosgrove, who has represented House District 78 since 2002, is the first candidate to file for the seat.


House of Delegates

A fifth Republican candidate has now entered the race to succeed Del. Lacey Putney, who announced his retirement after 52 years in the House.

Terry Austin joins Jim Crosby, Jerry Johnson, Zach Martin, and Jim McKelvey in seeking the Republican nomination in House District 19, which encompasses Allegheny County, Bedford City, and Covington, as well as parts of Bedford and Botetourt counties. Austin currently serves on the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors.

The GOP will select their nominee in a party-run firehouse primary on May 7.


UPDATE: APRIL 3

House of Delegates

Yesterday was the deadline for candidates to file paperwork with the SBE in order to participate in a June 11 primary.

A fourth Republican candidate has entered the race to succeed Del. Lacey Putney, who announced his retirement after 52 years in the House. Zach Martin joins Jim Crosby, Jerry Johnson, and Jim McKelvey in seeking the Republican nomination in House District 19, which encompasses Allegheny County, Bedford City, and Covington, as well as parts of Bedford and Botetourt counties. Martin previously served as the political director for State Senator Steve Newman. The GOP will select their nominee in a party-run firehouse primary on May 7.

In House District 39, which encompasses portions of Fairfax County, Republican Joe Bury is challenging Democratic incumbent Del. Vivian Watts. Bury also challenged Watts in 2009.

Later this week, Del. Bob Purkey (Republican) is expected to announce whether he will seek reelection in House District 82, which encompasses parts of Virginia Beach. City Councilman William DeSteph has opened a delegate committee to position himself to succeed Purkey, should he retire. Democratic challenger Bill Fleming is also running for this seat, which Purkey has held since 1986.

Governor's Race

Robert Sarvis, a Libertarian candidate from Northern Virginia, has joined the gubernatorial race. Sarvis previously ran as a Republican for the State Senate District 35 seat in 2011.

UPDATE: APRIL 2

House District 19

A third Republican candidate has entered the race to succeed Del. Lacey Putney, who announced his retirement after 52 years in the House.

Jim McKelvey joins Jim Crosby and Jerry Johnson in seeking the Republican nomination in House District 19. The district encompasses Allegheny County, Bedford City, and Covington, as well as parts of Bedford and Botetourt counties. McKelvey previously ran against U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt in the Republican primary for the 5th District seat in Congress.

The GOP will select their nominee in a firehouse primary on May 7.

House District 29

Republican Mark Berg is challenging incumbent Del. Beverly Sherwood for the party nomination in House District 29, which encompasses Winchester and parts of Frederick and Warren counties. Sherwood has held this seat since 1994. 

The GOP will select their nominee in a June 11 primary.

UPDATE: MARCH 27

House District 19

Independent Del. Lacey Putney, the longest-serving legislator in Virginia history, will not seek reelection this November.

Putney, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, has represented House District 19 since 1962. His district encompasses Allegheny County, Bedford City, and Covington, as well as parts of Bedford and Botetourt counties. Putney also briefly served as Speaker of the House in 2002.

Two Republican candidates, Jim Crosby and Jerry Johnson, are seeking to fill Putney's seat. The GOP will select their nominee in a party-run Firehouse Primary on May 7.

House District 28

Craig Ennis (Republican) is challenging incumbent Republican Del. Bill Howell in House District 28, which encompasses parts of Stafford County and Fredericksburg. Howell, the Speaker of the House, has held this seat since 1988. The GOP will select their nominee in a June 11 primary. 

Ennis also ran for this seat as an independent candidate in 2009.

House District 55

Chris Sullivan (Libertarian) joins Republican Buddy Fowler in the race for the open seat in House District 55, which encompasses parts of Caroline, Hanover, and Spotsylvania counties. The seat is currently held by retiring Del. John Cox (R-Ashland).

UPDATE: MARCH 26

A second incumbent Republican delegate now faces a primary challenge.

Dustin Curtis, a former chairman of the Fredericksburg Tea Party Patriots, will vie with Del. Bobby Orrock for the Republican nomination in House District 54. The district encompasses parts of Caroline and Spotsylvania counties. For the nomination process, Orrock has selected a primary, which will be held June 11. 

Orrock has represented District 54 since 1990. He also faced a primary challenge in 2005.

UPDATE: MARCH 21

The nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project has added one new candidate running for the House of Delegates.
  • Ken Bowman will vie with Les Adams for the Republican nomination in House District 16, which encompasses the city of Martinsville and parts of Pittsylvania and Henry counties. The GOP will select their nominee in a June 11 primary. The seat is being vacated by  retiring Del. Don Merricks (R-Danville). 
VPAP has also updated its list to reflect one candidate withdrawal.
  • Donna Sellinger (Democrat) has withdrawn from the race in House District 13, which encompasses Manassas Park and part of Prince William County. The seat is currently held by Del. Bob Marshall (R-Manassas), who is seeking reelection this November. Sellinger was the lone Democratic challenger in the race.

UPDATE: MARCH 20

VPAP has added one new candidate running for the House of Delegates:
  • Terry Modglin (Independent Green) is challenging incumbent Democrat Alfonso Lopez in House District 49, which encompasses parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties.

UPDATE: MARCH 19

VPAP has added two new candidates running for the House of Delegates:
  • Jeff Campbell (Republican) is running for the open seat in House District 6, which is being vacated by retiring Del. Anne Crockett-Stark (R-Wytheville). Campbell, a former Saltville mayor and councilman, is the first candidate to file for the seat. The district encompasses Carroll and Wythe counties and parts of Smyth County.
  • Ben Chafin (Republican) is running for the open seat in House District 4, which encompasses parts of Washington, Russell, Dickenson, and Wise counties. Chafin is the first candidate to file for the seat now held by Del. Joe Johnson (D-Abingdon), who announced last month he was not seeking reelection. This is Chafin's first bid for public office.

UPDATE: MARCH 14

VPAP has added four new candidates running for the House of Delegates:
  • Bill Dale (Democrat) is running for the open seat in House District 85, which is being vacated by retiring Del. Bob Tata (R-Virginia Beach). Dale, who previously ran for the Virginia Beach City Council, is the first Democratic candidate to file for the seat. The GOP will nominate a Republican candidate in a June 11 primary.
  • Jeff Engel (Independent) is challenging Democratic incumbent Rob Krupicka in House District 45, which encompasses parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties and Alexandria.
  • Buddy Fowler (Republican) is running for the open seat in House District 55, which encompasses parts of Caroline, Hanover, and Spotsylvania counties. Fowler, who served as the legislative aid for retiring Del. John Cox (R-Ashland), is the first candidate to file for the seat.
  • Jasper Hendricks (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent James Edmunds in House District 60, which encompasses Charlotte, Halifax, and Prince Edward counties and part of Campbell County.
One more incumbent delegate has also announced her retirement from the House:
  • Anne Crockett-Stark (Republican) will not  be seeking reelection in House District 6, which encompasses Carroll and Wythe counties and parts of Smyth County. Crockett-Stark has held this seat since 2006.

UPDATE: MARCH 13

The nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project added one new candidate running for the House of Delegates.
  • Donna Sellinger is a Democratic candidate in House District 13, which encompasses Manassas Park and part of Prince William County. Sellinger is seeking to challenge Republican Del. Bob Marshall, who has served in the House since 1992.

UPDATE: MARCH 6

One more incumbent delegate has announced his retirement from the House:
  • Don Merricks (Republican) will not be seeking reelection in House District 16, which encompasses Martinsville and parts of Pittsylvania and Henry counties. Merricks has held this seat since 2008.

UPDATE: MARCH 5

The nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project added two new candidates running for the House of Delegates:
  • Freeda Cathcart (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Chris Head in House District 17, which encompasses parts of Roanoke and Botetourt counties and Roanoke City. Cathcart and Head ran against each other in 2011, when the seat was open.
  • Marcus Simon (Democrat) is running for the open seat in House District 53, which is being vacated by retiring Del. Jim Scott (D-Merrifield). Simon, who served as Scott's legislative aid in 1990s, is the first candidate to file for the seat. The district encompasses Falls Church and parts of Fairfax County. 

UPDATE: MARCH 4

Two more incumbent delegates have announced their retirement from the House.
  • John Cox (Republican) will not be seeking reelection in House District 55, which encompasses parts of Hanover, Caroline, and Spotsylvania counties. Cox has held this seat for two terms.
  • Jim Scott (Democrat) will not seek election to another term in House District 53. Scott has represented the district -- which encompasses Falls Church and part of Fairfax County -- since 1992.
One new candidate has also filed paperwork for the House. His first campaign finance report will be due April 15.
  • Glenn Davis (Republican) is running for House District 84, which encompasses part of Virginia Beach. Davis is the first candidate to announce for the seat now held by Del. Sal Iaquinto, who announced last week he was not seeking reelection. 

UPDATE: MARCH 1

For the first time since 2005, an incumbent Republican delegate is facing a primary challenge. Del. Joe May is being challenged by Dave LaRock, a small-business owner and resident of Loudoun County. For the nomination process, May has selected a primary, which will be held June 11.

May has represented House District 33 since 1994.

Meanwhile, two other Democrats have filed paperwork to challenge GOP incumbents:

  • Patrick Casula (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Bob Marshall in House District 13, which encompasses Manassas Park and part of Prince William County. 
  • Jerrold Foltz (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Tim Hugo in House District 40, which encompasses parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties.

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 27

VPAP has updated its list of candidates running for the House to reflect the retirement of one incumbent delegate.

  • Del. Joe Johnson  has announced he will not seek reelection in House District 4, which encompasses parts of Washington, Russell, Dickenson, and Wise counties. Johnson, one of the last in a tradition of rural Democrats, has served in the House of Delegates for 28 years, holding office from 1966-1969 and from 1990-2013. 

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 26

The nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project added one new candidate running for the House of Delegates.

  • Gary Miller (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Danny Marshall in House District 14, which encompasses parts of Danville and Pittsylvania and Henry counties.
VPAP has also updated its list to reflect one candidate withdrawal.
  • Patrick Salyer (Republican) has withdrawn from the race in House District 85, leaving three candidates -- Gary Byler, Scott Taylor, and Jeremy Waters -- to vie for the Republican nomination in the June 11 GOP primary. The seat is currently held by retiring Del. Bob Tata (R-Virginia Beach).

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 15

Three new candidates -- all Democrats -- have filed candidacy paperwork for the House of Delegates with the State Board of Elections. Their first campaign finance reports will be due April 15.


UPDATE: FEBRUARY 4

Four new candidates have filed paperwork to raise money for the House of Delegates:

  • Traci Dippert (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Ed Scott in House District 30, which encompasses portions of Orange, Culpeper, and Madison counties.
  • Bill Fleming (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Bob Purkey in House District 82, which encompasses Virginia Beach City. Fleming previously ran for the State Senate District 8 seat in the 2010 Special Election.
  • Michael Futrell (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Mark Dudenhefer in House District 2, which straddles the Prince William/Stafford county line. This is Futrell's first bid for public office
  • Colin Harris (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Michael Webert in House District 18, which encompasses parts of Fauquier, Warren, Culpeper, and Rappahannock counties. This is Harris's first bid for public office.

UPDATE: JANUARY 15

Four new candidates have filed paperwork to raise money for the House of Delegates:

  • John Bell (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent David Ramadan in House District 87, which encompasses parts of Loudoun and Prince William counties.
  • Kathleen Murphy (Democrat) is running for House District 34, which straddles the Fairfax/Loudoun county line. The district is currently represented by Republican Barbara Comstock.
  • William Quarles (Democrat) is challenging Republican incumbent Lee Ware in House District 65, which encompasses northwestern Chesterfield County and parts of Fluvanna, Goochland, and Powhatan. Quarles previously served on the Goochland County Board of Supervisors.
  • James Scheideman (Constitution Party), is running for House District 76, which encompasses parts of the cities of Suffolk and Chesapeake. The district is represented by Republican Chris Jones, who was first elected in 1998. Scheideman previously challenged Jones in 2005.

UPDATE: JANUARY 7

Two new candidates have filed paperwork to raise money for the House of Delegates:

  • Monte Johnson (Democrat), a senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, is challenging incumbent Del. Randy Minchew (R-Leesburg) for his seat in House District 10. This is Johnson's first bid for public office.
  • Herb Kemp (Democrat), the CEO of defense contractor OneALPHA, has announced plans to challenge against Del. Tom Rust (R-Herndon). Kemp joins joins Jennifer Boysko, legislative aide to Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust, in seeking the Democratic nomination in House District 86, which straddles the Fairfax-Loudoun line near Dulles Airport. 
It wasn't immediately clear Friday how District 86 Democrats plan to select their nominee. A primary would be held June 11. The general election is set for November 5.
