Legislators' Personal Finances
The Virginia Public Access Project has posted the 2012 Statement of Economic Interests submitted by members of the General Assembly.
VPAP has aggregated the information to provide greater insight into the makeup of the 140 men and women who represent the state's 8 million residents.
Occupation
How many lawmakers make a living from agriculture? How many work in government affairs? How many are lawyers? VPAP has the answers at a glance.
Note: While the SEI forms do not include a space to list occupation, VPAP compiled this information from the General Assembly website and the SEI coversheet (listing sources of salary and wages) and Schedule A (officers and directors).Stocks/Investments
The financial disclosures are not detailed enough to calculate the net worth of lawmakers. There's no requirement, for instance, to list the assessed value of real estate minus any mortgages. The disclosures provide a somewhat more clear view of wealth in the form of stocks and investments. Legislators must tag each holding with a value range: $10,001-$50,000; $50,001-$250,000" and "$251,000 and up."
Using the lower value of each range, VPAP calculated the minimum value of each legislators' stock holdings.
Caveat: This conservative approach -- using the minimum amount of each range -- likely under-values the stock holdings of most legislators. The calculation is more certain for the 35 legislators who reported owning no stocks, securities or investments worth more than $10,000.Real Estate
The disclosures require legislators to list any real property (other than their primary residence) in which they have an ownership interest. VPAP has crossed the real estate schedule (H) with the business income schedule (F-1) to create three groups of legislators who:
- Own real property used to generate rental income (or to operate a business)
- Own real property but report no income
- Own no real property other than their primary residence.
You also can view the complete form of any individual lawmaker. SEARCH

Trending Topics
During the first two weeks of the 2013 General Assembly, there was not a single newspaper story published about redistricting. The issue exploded out of nowhere in week three, momentarily eclipsing the two main planks of Governor McDonnell's agenda -- transportation funding and education.

The chart above shows the number of articles on three select topics that appeared during the first five weeks of the legislature session in VaNews, the newspaper compilation service provided by the Virginia Public Access Project.
As redistricting receded in the headlines, transportation and education have trended back toward the top of the news food chain.
