2018 Redistricting

In a lawsuit filed by Democrats, federal judges ruled that the 2011 House of Delegates maps ran afoul of the Voting Rights Act because when crafting 11 Black-majority districts, Republicans had used race as a "predominate" factor. The General Assembly met in special session in 2018 in an attempt to correct the flaw. But after the legislature deadlocked, the U.S. District Court imposed a map in January 2019 that modified 25 House districts in Southeastern Virginia.
