Gov. McDonnell's third-year fundraising

A complete report of Gov. Bob McDonnell's political fundraising in 2012 will not be available until the fourth-quarter disclosures are due January 15. However, his accumulated reports of donations of $10,000 or more shed light on the year's overall trend.

The numbers show McDonnell's PAC, Opportunity Virginia, experienced a falloff in political donations in 2012, which is typical for a Governor in the third year of a four-year term.

McDonnell's PAC reported $1.1 million in donations of $10,000 or more during 2012, down 65% from his second-year total of $3.1 million.

His predecessor, Tim Kaine, experienced a similar falloff at the same point in his term, though the percentage drop was less severe. Kaine's third-year large donations fell 57% from his second-year peak.

It remains to be seen what will happen in 2013, as candidates seeking to succeed McDonnell move to the head of the fundraising line. If Kaine's experience is any guide, McDonnell's fundraising will continue to fall in the fourth and final year of his term.
