VPAP has learned of two new developments since this morning.
First, Speaker Bill Howell has set January 6th as the date for a special election to replace Republican Del. Barbara Comstock, four days after she resigns her seat to join the U.S. Congress.
Second, Al Johnson is now the second Republican to declare for the race. He will vie for the GOP nomination with Craig Parisot in a firehouse primary on November 15th.
Kathleen Murphy, who lost to Comstock by 422 votes in 2013, is currently the only Democrat to declare.
The 34th District runs along the Potomac River and is comprised of parts of Fairfax and Loudoun counties.
