House Freshmen Draw Lots for Seniority
Chris Collins, a Republican from Frederick County, drew lucky number 91 to determine the seniority of incoming freshmen members of the House of Delegates, according to information from the House Clerk's Office.
As always, freshman will start toward the bottom of the pecking order when the General Assembly convenes in January. On Friday, the 11 delegates-elect picked numbers out of a hat to determine who will start at the top -- and bottom -- within their own class.
There is more at stake than who gets the lowest license plate number. Because committee chairmanships generally are based on seniority, those who drew the lowest numbers could have a leg up on their classmates in the future when subcommittee and committee chairs are parceled out.
The lots were drawn in the following order:
One freshman -- Mark Dudenhefer (R-Stafford) -- got a free pass in the drawing, thanks to his prior service in the House of Delegates (2012-14). Del-elect Dudenhefer will enter #90 on the House seniority chart.
In the State Senate, the seven-member freshman class has yet to draw lots for seniority.
