Twenty years ago, almost one in three members of the Virginia House of Delegates had at least 15 years of legislative experience. Retirements, elections to the State Senate and two wave elections -- in 2009 and 2017 -- thinned the ranks of long-tenured delegates. When the General Assembly convenes in January, nearly half of House members will have four years or less of seniority.
