New Virginia Candidates


In the last week, VPAP has added eight names to its unofficial lists of candidates running for State Senate and House of Delegates. Also included below are three more legislators and candidates who announced in the last week that they would not run in November.

State Senate

Senate District 20

Sen. Lynwood Lewis (D-Accomac) announced that he would not seek re-election in November. He had been paired in the district with Sen. Bill DeSteph (R-Virginia Beach), who is seeking re-election. Lewis’ departure leaves Victoria Luevanos seeking the Democratic nomination. SD 20 includes Accomack and Northampton counties, as well as portions of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 57.1% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 26

Pam Garner is the first Democrat running in this “strong Republican” district that stretches from the Richmond suburbs to Williamsburg. Sen. Ryan McDougle (R-Mechanicsville) is the sole Republican running after Senate Minority Leader Tommy Norment (R-Williamsburg) announced last week that he would not seek re-election. SD 26 includes Gloucester, Mathews, and New Kent counties, as well as parts of Hanover, James City, and King & Queen counties. In November 2021, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 64.2% of the vote.

Senate District 32

Former Del. Ibaheem Samirah is the second candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Del. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Sterling) entered the race last week after Sen. John Bell (D-Chantilly) announced that he would not seek re-election. Greg Moulthrop is the only Republican running so far in this Loudoun County district. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 60.2% of the vote in November 2021.

House of Delegates

House District 15

Henri' Thompson is the second candidate seeking the Democratic nomination in this open seat in Fairfax County. Laura Jane Cohen (D) is also running. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 60.9% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 18

Del. Eileen Filler-Corn (D-Fairfax Station) announced that she would not seek re-election in this Fairfax County district. That leaves Del. Kathy Tran (D-Springfield) unopposed for the Democratic nomination.  VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 63.6% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 26

This Loudoun County seat became open last week when Del. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Sterling) announced he would run for the Senate. Kannan Srinivasan (D), who previously had been running in HD27, announced he would seek the Democratic nomination. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 61.4% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 41

James Harder withdrew from the Democratic primary, leaving Lily Franklin as the only Democrat running. Two candidates, Lowell Bowman and Chris Obenshain, are seeking the Republican nomination in the district that includes portions of Montgomery and Roanoke counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 55.5% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 42

Jody Pyles is challenging Del. Jason Ballard (R-Pearisburg) for the Republican nomination. HD 42 includes Giles County and Radford City, as well as portions of Montgomery and Pulaski counties. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 66.3% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 58

Riley Shaia announced for the Republican nomination. Del. Rodney Willett (D-Henrico) is also running in this Henrico County district that VPAP rates "Competitive". In November 2021, Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 52.0% of the vote.

House District 73

Yan Gleyzer is the third candidate seeking the Republican nomination in this Chesterfield County district. Republicans Mark Earley Jr. and Ryan Harter are also running. Last week, Del. Roxann Robinson (R-Chesterfield) announced that she would not seek re-election. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 57.1% of the vote last November.

House District 86

Ron Lee announced he would seek the Democratic nomination in this Peninsula district. Del. A.C. Cordoza (R-Hampton) is also running in the district, which includes the City of Poquoson and portions of Hampton City and York County. VPAP rates this a “leans Republican” district where voters gave Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin an estimated 54.2% of the vote in the November 2021 governor's race.

VPAP’s unofficial list of legislative candidates includes those candidates who have a) filed paperwork with the State Department of Elections or Federal Election Commission declaring their intention to raise money or b) announced publicly they are running for office.
