New Legislative Candidates


It’s been an eventful week for those tracking candidates running in General Assembly elections. Thursday was the deadline for those seeking to run in primary elections that will be run by local election officials on June 20. VPAP will update its site as party officials certify candidate paperwork. VPAP added 9 names to its unofficial lists of candidates running for State Senate and House of Delegates. Also included below are five legislators who announced in the last week that they would not be running in November.

State Senate

Senate District 14 (Richmond/Henrico)

Del. Dawn Adams (D-Richmond) withdrew from the election leaving Senator-elect Lamont Bagby (D-Richmond) and Katie Gooch as the only candidates running in a June 20 Democratic primary. No Republican candidates have announced so far in this district that includes part of Richmond City and Henrico County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 76.5% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 19 (Chesapeake/Virginia Beach)

Former Del. Tim Anderson (R-Virginia Beach) and Jeff Bruzzesi announced they are seeking the Republican nomination in this open seat that straddles Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Christie Craig, aide to retiring state Sen. John Cosgrove (R-Chesapeake) had announced the previous week. Myra Payne is the only Democratic candidate so far. VPAP rates SD 19 a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 61.5% of the vote in November 2021.


Senate District 34 (Fairfax County)

Sen. Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon) is the Democratic nominee after an 11th-hour candidate, Lisa Sales, filed too few voter signatures to qualify for the June 20 primary. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 67.3% of the vote in November 2021. (This was updated at 3:05 pm on 4/7/2023)


Senate District 37 (Fairfax County/Falls Church/Fairfax City)

Ken Reid is the first candidate seeking the Republican nomination in this strong Democratic district that includes the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax and parts of Fairfax County. Sen. Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax) faces two Democratic challengers, Salim Saddam and Erika Yalowitz. VPAP rates SD 37 a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 67.9% of the vote in November 2021.

 

House of Delegates

House District 6 (McLean/Great Falls)

Kristin Hoffman is the first candidate seeking the Republican nomination. Del. Rip Sullivan (D-Arlington) is the Democratic nominee in this district that includes part of Fairfax County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 60.4% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 26 (Loudoun County)

Rafi Khaja is the first candidate seeking the Republican nomination in this Loudoun County district. Sreedhar Nagireddi and Kannan Srinivasan are vying for the Democratic nomination. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 61.4% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 29 (Loudoun County)

Marty Martinez is the Democratic nominee for this Loudoun County district, since his only opponent, Michelle Thomas, did not file the paperwork to qualify for the June 20 primary. No Republican candidates have announced. VPAP rates HD 29 a "leans Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 55.3% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 44 (Bristol/Abingdon)

Del. Will Wampler (R-Bristol) announced he would not seek re-election, leaving Del. Israel O'Quinn (R-Bristol) as the GOP nominee. No Democrat has announced. HD 44 includes Bristol City and Washington County, as well as part of Russell County. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 79.0% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 46 (Wythe/Smyth/Grayson)

Del. Jeff Campbell (R-Marion) announced he would not seek re-election, and his legislative aide Jed Arnold announced he would seek the Republican nomination. No Democratic candidates have announced. HD 46 includes Grayson, Smyth, and Wythe counties, as well as part of Pulaski County. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 81.4% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 86 (Hampton/York/Poquoson)

Alycia Singletary is the second candidate seeking the Democratic nomination in this district that includes Poquoson and portions of York County and Hampton. Ron Lee is also seeking the Democratic nomination. Del. A.C. Cordoza (R-Hampton) is the only GOP nominee.  VPAP rates HD 86 a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 54.2% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 89 (Chesapeake/Suffolk)

James Ramsey is the second candidate seeking the Democratic nomination in this district that includes portions of Chesapeake and Suffolk. Karen Jenkins is also vying for the Democratic nomination. Three candidates are seeking the Republican nomination: Don Carey, Baxter Ennis and Jason Wooldridge. VPAP rates HD 89 a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 53.4% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 98 (Virginia Beach)

Del. Glenn Davis (R-Virginia Beach) announced he would not seek re-election, leaving Del. Barry Knight (R-Virginia Beach) the GOP nominee. Zach Coltrain is the Democratic nominee. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 63.1% of the vote in November 2021.
