Habeeb, Stanley Win
Updated 1/12/2011
Republicans held onto two General Assembly seats recently vacated by two GOP state lawmakers who won seats in Congress.
Bill Stanley, a lawyer from Franklin County, garnered 61 percent of the vote to win a special election in Senate District 19. Stanley defeated Democrat Hank Davis, the chairman of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors. Stanley succeeds U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt.
Greg Habeeb carried 63 percent of the vote in House District 8 to defeat Democrat Ginger Mumpower. Habeeb succeeds U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith.
The State Board of Elections is meeting this morning at 10 a.m. to certify the results of the two special elections. Stanley and Habeeb are expected to be sworn in when the 2011 General Assembly convenes at noon today.
The Assembly still has one empty seat. Former Del. Tom Gear (R-Hampton) resigned in late December, and the special election will held March 8, more than a week after the legislature is scheduled to adjourn.
