In 1990, Virginia's population was three-quarters white. By 2040, the U.S. Census Bureau projects that Virginia will be a "minority majority" state. VPAP has released an interactive map showing-- decade-by-decade -- the change in the racial and ethnic makeup of each city and county.
If you randomly picked two persons from a locality, what is the probability that they would be from different racial or ethnic backgrounds? VPAP has released a new map showing how the 'diversity index' of each locality is projected to change by 2040. There's also a chart showing the biggest and smallest change in each region.
This is the final part of a three day series focusing on demographic trends.
Data for these visuals comes from the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service.
