Coming Today: July Finance Reports
Today is a campaign finance deadline for Virginia congressional candidates and candidates for local office who are running this November.
Today is also one of two days this year when all state PACs and candidates (even those who are not on the ballot this year) must provide a public accounting of their finances.
The deadline is 11:59 p.m. tonight. By 6 p.m. today, VPAP will post the state and local disclosures that had been filed by the close of business with the Virginia Department of Elections.
Look for a full report in tomorrow morning’s special Saturday edition of VaNews.
Congressional Candidates
First thing tomorrow morning, VPAP will post an interactive data visual that allows you to sort candidates running for the U.S. House from Virginia by amount raised and cash on hand.
General Assembly Candidates
For legislative candidates, the mid-year disclosures cover the first half of the year. This will be the first public insight into fundraising by an unusually large number of challengers – motivated by opportunities from new district boundaries – who have announced 18 months before the next general election in November 2023.
- By 6 pm this afternoon: VPAP will post the reports that were received by the close of business. Our pages rank candidates by amount raised and allow you to browse a list of contributors and expenditures.
- Around 8:30 am Saturday, VPAP will post all reports that were received overnight. We’ll also have a data visual ranking the amount raised by political newcomers.
Candidates for Local Office
VPAP has a new interface that allows you to rank all candidates for local office by amount raised and cash on hand as of June 30. You can also drill down to an individual candidate’s report to see top-level numbers (raised, spent, cash on hand) and lists of itemized contributions and expenses.
- Local Candidates on the November 2022 ballot
These reports cover activity from June 10 - June 30.
- Local Candidates NOT on the ballot this year.
These reports cover activity from January 1 - June 30.
Non-Candidate PACs and Party Committees
These reports cover activity from April 1 - June 30.
- Leadership Committees by Elected Officials
- Political Party, Caucus and other Partisan
- Labor and Single-Interest Groups
- Companies and Business Trade Associations
By 7 a.m. tomorrow, VPAP will update the numbers on its site to include all reports that came by the deadline.
Meanwhile, the VPAP team will work through the weekend to add value to the thousands of transactions contained in the reports. This includes assigning a unique ID to each donor, tagging donors by occupation, and assigning a purpose code to each expenditure. Look for these value-added reports to be fully integrated into vpap.org by the middle of next week.
