New Legislative Candidates


This week, VPAP added six names to its unofficial candidate list. VPAP also removed three candidates who withdrew from their party primaries or failed to qualify for the ballot.

New Candidates

State Senate

Senate District 1 (Winchester/Valley)

Blaine Dunn is the eighth candidate seeking the Republican nomination. One Democratic candidate, Emily Scott, is running in the district that VPAP rates “strong Republican.” SD 1 includes the counties of Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren, as well as the City of Winchester. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 68.1% of the vote in November 2021.


Senate District 28 (Piedmont)

Independent candidate Tawana Campbell is running. Two candidates, Mike Allers and Sen. Bryce Reeves (R-Spotsylvania), are seeking the Republican nomination. SD 28 includes Culpeper, Greene, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock counties, as well as portions of Fauquier and Spotsylvania counties. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 67.1% of the vote in November 2021.

 

House of Delegates

House District 15 (Fairfax County)

Marcus Evans is the first Republican candidate running in this Fairfax County district. Three candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination: Laura Jane Cohen, Eric Schmidt, and Henri' Thompson. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 60.9% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 40 (Roanoke)

Misty Vickers is the first Democratic candidate running. Del. Joe McNamara (R-Roanoke) is the only Republican candidate running in the district that includes Salem and parts of Roanoke City and Roanoke County. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 59.2% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 55 (Albemarle/Louisa/Fluvanna)

Reid Wernig is the first Republican candidate running. Amy Laufer and Kellen Squire are seeking the Democratic nomination. HD 55 includes portions of Albemarle, Louisa, Nelson, and Fluvanna counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Democratic" district where voters gave Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe an estimated 55.5% of the vote in the November 2021 gubernatorial election.


House District 75 (Chesterfield/Hopewell)

Stephen Miller-Pitts is the first Democratic candidate running. Del. Carrie Coyner (R-Chesterfield) is the only Republican candidate running in the district that includes Hopewell and parts of Chesterfield and Prince George counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 53.6% of the vote in November 2021.

 

Withdrawn Candidates

State Senate

Senate District 37 (Fairfax/Falls Church)

Democrat Erika Yalowitz withdrew from the election and endorsed Saddam Salim in his primary challenge against Sen. Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax). One Republican candidate, Ken Reid, is running in the district that includes Fairfax and Falls Church cities, as well as a part of Fairfax County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 67.9% of the vote in November 2021.


House of Delegates

House District 82 (Petersburg/Dinwiddie)

Democrat Branden Riley withdrew. Two remaining candidates, Kimberly Pope Adams and Victor McKenzie, are seeking the Democratic nomination. Del. Kim Taylor (R-Dinwiddie) is the only Republican candidate running in the district that includes Petersburg City and Surry County, as well as portions of Dinwiddie and Prince George counties. VPAP rates this a "competitive" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 50.6% of the vote in November 2021.


House District 94 (Norfolk)

Republican Antonio Respass withdrew. Three remaining candidates are seeking the Republican nomination: Amy Chudzinski, Kenneth O'Brien, and Andrew Pittman. Phil Hernandez is the only Democratic candidate running in this Norfolk district. VPAP rates this a "competitive" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 51.4% of the vote in November 2021.

VPAP’s unofficial list of legislative candidates includes those candidates who have a) filed paperwork with the State Department of Elections or Federal Election Commission declaring their intention to raise money or b) announced publicly they are running for office.
