STATE PROSECUTORS: NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CHARGE VA. BEACH COUNCILMAN JOHN UHRIN

The Virginia Beach commonwealth's attorney announced Tuesday that prosecutors don't have sufficient evidence to charge Councilman John Uhrin with conflict-of-interest violations, but a federal investigation into Uhrin's votes on the Cavalier Hotel project continues. Commonwealth's Attorney Colin Stolle said he has closed an investigation that had not been publicly announced. He would not say how long it lasted or when it concluded.

FBI, STATE POLICE CONDUCTING JOINT INTERVIEWS IN INQUIRIES OF UHRIN, SESSOMS

The FBI and Virginia State Police are conducting joint interviews in their separate criminal investigations of votes taken by Councilman John Uhrin and Mayor Will Sessoms, and the city has turned over more than 5,000 pages of documents subpoenaed by a federal grand jury.

FBI OPENS INVESTIGATION OF UHRIN'S VOTE ON CAVALIER

The FBI has opened a criminal investigation into Councilman John Uhrin's vote that approved millions in taxpayer incentives to renovate The Cavalier Hotel and allow a luxury housing community on the site weeks before his wife was hired to market the homes. A federal grand jury ordered Virginia Beach to turn over computer records, emails and phone logs surrounding Uhrin's July 2013 City Council vote on The Cavalier Hotel renovation project. The request seeks documents related to East Beach Realty and several other companies associated with Uhrin's wife, Catherine J. Sassone, according to a federal subpoena released Friday.

BEACH COUNCILMAN FILES TO GET ARREST WIPED OFF RECORD

John Uhrin, a city councilman, is close to having his 2012 arrest on a charge of assaulting his wife wiped from his record. Uhrin has filed for expungement of all police and court records relating to the misdemeanor count, which was never prosecuted. The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office has said in court documents it has no objection.

BEACH COUNCILMAN DIDN'T HIT HIS WIFE, ATTORNEY SAYS

The attorney for Councilman John Uhrin said his client did not hit his wife, but the two did argue Saturday night in the driveway. A neighbor called police, and Uhrin, 44, was charged with domestic assault. Uhrin's wife wants the charges dropped, attorney Sonny Stallings said Monday.

VA. BEACH COUNCILMEN WANT NOV. LIGHT-RAIL REFERENDUM

The City Council could decide as early as next week whether to hold a referendum in November on extending the Tide light-rail line into Virginia Beach from Norfolk. Councilmen John Uhrin and Jim Wood on Tuesday presented a resolution to the council calling for a Nov. 6 referendum.
