For some Virginians, talk of cutting Medicaid funds hits home

As Republican members of Congress focus more on what Washington pays to support expanded Medicaid coverage, Jessi Ross, thinking of her path to recovery from addiction, is growing alarmed. “I’m not even sure if I would be alive if it were not for Medicaid,” Ross said Wednesday at a news conference at the General Assembly Building where she and others called on Virginia’s congressional delegation not to cut Medicaid funding.

Suffolk School Board exploring changes to transgender student policies

The Suffolk School Board will meet in May to review proposed changes to policies for transgender and nonbinary students, which would align with those introduced by Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration in 2023. LGBT community advocates fear doing so will be detrimental to gender-nonconforming students’ mental health and put them at greater risk of bullying and violence. Suffolk implemented its current policies in 2023. Superintendent John Gordon said during a recent school board meeting that they were crafted to balance students’ and parents’ rights, calling them a “mixed blend” of Youngkin’s and former Gov. Ralph Northam’s policies.

Over 100 people address Virginia Beach School Board in meeting outlining DEI removal

Virginia Beach’s School Board unveiled its first steps on Tuesday night to remove diversity, equity and inclusion policies from its schools. Though no program offerings, clubs or special education plans have been halted since the board approved an anti-DEI resolution on April 8, the division has suspended the educational equity policy and equity dashboard until further review. ... Virginia Beach’s NAACP organized a town hall meeting April 14 to discuss the impact of DEI programs, and rallied speakers to express dissent at Tuesday night’s gathering. The Virginia Beach Education Association, also encouraged speakers to attend the meeting. In total, 113 people, including 10 students, signed up to speak.

Virginia Beach residents react to school board’s decision to eliminate DEI

More than 100 speakers lined up Tuesday night to comment on the Virginia Beach City Public School Board’s new policy eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion. The meeting went past midnight. While some applauded the school board’s vote two weeks ago to implement the policy to retain federal funding, most disapproved of the decision. Ten students spoke to oppose the rollback and explained how a school culture of inclusion has benefited them.
