Qasim Rashid running in 1st Congressional District's Democratic primary

Stafford lawyer Qasim Rashid is running for Congress in the 1st District. The Democrat ran in the state Senate 28th District race last November. He lost to incumbent Republican Richard Stuart 57%-42%. Rep. Rob Wittman, a Republican, was first elected in a 2007 special election, and won re-election to a sixth full term in 2018, defeating challenger Vangie Williams 55%-45%.

Sen. Stuart wants to put tuition increases to a vote by students

A proposal from a Republican senator would require student approval before a public college or university approves a tuition raise. Sen. Richard Stuart, R-Stafford, wants tuition hikes to go to the students who will have to pay for it before a governing board votes. His legislation, which he introduced last year too and calls “crazy,” calls for two-thirds of a school’s student body to approve the raise before formal adoption.

Judge refuses to toss charge over threat to Muslim candidate

A federal judge refused on Monday to throw out a case in which a North Carolina man is charged with anonymously threatening to lynch a Muslim-American man campaigning for a state Senate seat in Virginia. Joseph Cecil Vandevere is charged with interstate communication of a threat to injure a person in connection with a tweet directed at candidate Qasim Rashid. The tweet included a picture of a lynching and read, “VIEW YOUR DESTINY.”

Stuart, Rashid debate for Senate seat

Incumbent Republican State Sen. Richard Stuart met Democratic challenger Qasim Rashid Thursday night during a debate before a packed meeting hall at the University of Mary Washington’s Stafford County campus. Rashid, a Democrat, writer and human rights attorney, squared off with Stuart on a variety of issues including transportation, equal rights, health care, guns, immigration, the minimum wage and student loan debt.

Democratic candidates compete for 28th District Senate seat

Laura Sellers served as a Stafford County supervisor, representing the Garrisonville District, from 2014 to 2018. At the June 11 primary, Sellers will face political newcomer Qasim Rashid, a Stafford County attorney who specializes in human rights law.
