Ten Democrats crowd Alexandria council race months before filing deadline

Alexandria Democrats are lining up to run for City Council seats in the June 12 primary, with more than two months until the filing deadline. The latest to seek a seat on the six-person council is Canek Aguirre, 32, chair of the local economic opportunities commission and president of the board of Tenants and Workers United.

Alexandria candidates mix it up at forum

The first sense that opinions had already formed in the Alexandria crowd at Tuesday night’s candidates forum came just a few minutes into the debate between mayoral candidates. Mayor Bill Euille (D), who’s led the city for nine years and served a previous nine on the City Council, defended the council’s May 11 decision on development along the Beauregard Street corridor in the West End, citing years of community meetings.

Alexandrians crowd election ballots

Alexandria Republicans have come up with a slate of three candidates to run for the six City Council seats up for election this year. The Democrats have 14 candidates battling for six nominations to be decided by a primary June 12. That’s also the deadline for any independent candidate to register.
